| Oce Smith: Just Observin' Column for April 12th, 2009
|
I don't know how many of you read the column by Oce Smith on Easter Sunday but it had some information about our area and the communities within. Oce is recovering from an illness at the moment and this column was prefaced by a note stating that it was a previously written column.
A think that struck my attention in his "observin'" of Farmington is that the information wasn't all that accurate. So I wanted to publish this excerpt from the article which is just the part that covers Farmington:
Finally, we drove over through Idamay to Farmington, where, certainly no disrespect intended, there was virtually no downtown Farmington remaining - except for the large Manchin Clinic, which hovers over its domain like a giant cloud draping itself down over a huge field of corn. Although the old-time Farmington Farmers are still unalterably angry about losing their high school, the young set seem to accept it with more grace and less care than in some other corners of the County of the Swamp Fox, in that it is just a short sprint up the road to their present unit. However, the commercial life of the town is another story. The Manchin Furniture Store and Papa Joe's Grocery Store burned down, as did their carpet outlet over on the main highway. Ningy Parrish's Drug Store & Soda Fountain is gone. Edna Parrish's Resturant is gone. The Gango place is gone. The Toothman Hardware is now gone. We don't knwo about Sam Bennett's Pool Room. The tremendous new bridge which the state erected across the creek was certainly a plus in regard to the traffic flow, and across the creek and across Route 250 the Hutsons have built a beautiful new funeral parlor, if innately a funeral parlor can be beautiful. Although it is outside the realm of Downtown Farmington, there is some commercial activity up along Route 250 to the north of the town.
I just wanted to clear up the fact that Toothman Hardware is very much open and doing well. I'm certain several gentlemen in the area would be wondering what in the world they were doing buying bird seed, household this and that, or just a friendly talk or piece of advice from Bob if, according to Mr. Smith, he were closed down. I think just about the only time he was shut down was when the tractor trailor hit the side of the building in the 1990's if only for a day or two.
I also wanted to say that we may not have a Drug Store & Soda Fountain, but you can still get your prescriptions filled at the Drug Store located inside the Manchin Clinic, you can also recieve a nice cut and color at the three beauty parlors we have in town, either Lisa K's ProStyling and Cuts, Curry's Cut and Curl or Tranquil Waters. We also have a functioning Senior Citizens Center, a Martial Arts Studio, Private Investigative Service, a local Bee Keeper for all our honey needs, as well as all the businesses within and just outside of city limits on Rt. 250. We may not be booming, but we still have local people who help out our community, and I'd rather take my business to Tom Sherry than a Grease Monkey any day, and I know if I need help with my organization or a fundraiser, there are several people who are ready to give whatever they can to help out.
But that's just me, "observin'." |
