Farmington News for the week of March 23rd
Farmington News Week of March 23rd 2009

Good Morning Farmington!

I wanted to thank everyone who called me with info about the mystery man in the picture from last week. (and also everyone who called just to tell me how much they enjoyed it!) Unfortunately we have four different identities now! I think a lot of people really enjoyed seeing such a blast from the past type picture of our community to see what is still there, what looks almost the same, and what we have lost to disrepair (or fire) over the years. Thanks again for reading Farmers!

Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Debbie Burton who will be 89 years young on April 2nd. We certainly hope that it’s a happy one!

Chicken Roasts Starting Soon!
Tom Menas and Co. will be roasting chickens starting March 28th at Chancellor’s located on Rt. 250 north just before North Marion High School. The regular favorites will still be on the menu including chickens, noodles and such, as well as the addition of hoagies which will come with peppers and cheese. Chickens will be ready around 12:15 and anyone who wants to place an order a head of time can call 825-6204

Marion Co. Baby Shower to feature local Club
On Saturday March 28th the Middletown Mall in Fairmont will be hosting a Marion County Baby Shower from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Shower will feature different local organizations, shops and vendors, and clubs including the MOMS Club of Fairmont which will have a booth during the Shower. Candidates Announced for Town Election
The candidates have been announced for the Town Election which will be held on June 9th, 2009. Candidate Donna Costello is running unopposed for the office of Mayor. The office of Recorder did not have an interested candidate but can be filled by a write in candidate. There are five open seats for Town Council and six candidates filed. They are (as appearing on the ballot in this order) Stephanie Jones Cummons, Barrie Sanders, Valerie Sanders, Jonathan R. Toothman, Jon Sanders, and Isabelle Roach. Anyone wishing to file as a write-in candidate may do so by the deadline of April 28th. Good Luck to all the candidates and please remember to mark your calendar to vote in this upcoming election!

Flowers Look Fantastic!
I was really happy to see that the memorial on Mill Street was getting some care at the end of the week. I’m not sure which group I should give credit to, but the flowers look absolutely beautiful and all the weeds and trash cleared out. (A little hint: The Ray Kelly Athletic Field memorial could use a little splash of color too!) Everyone should take a look as they’re driving through town! We really appreciate our groups and organizations who take the time and the interest in making our community a little better!

Local Organizations and Groups Keep Us Spruced Up!

I noticed on Friday afternoon that we had some people working around the monument on Mill Street doing a bit of yard work. It's really nice of our local groups, organizations and clubs to remember spots in our community that need a little extra care now and again. I'm not sure who I should thank for the gardening, but it's much appreciated! The memorial used to be the site of many a Memorial Day programs for as long as I can remember. Many of us can recall A. James Manchin himself standing there telling about his Mom making porkchops for him "christened by a Mother's tears" and getting a little choked up as he spoke. In the past two years, the parade and program hasn't taken place in our community, and many people miss the festivities, but it's nice to see that the monument itself hasn't been forgotten. Thanks to those involved in the clean-up!

Farmington News for the Week of March 16th 2009

Article as submitted by Stephanie Jones Cummons, Farmington Correspondent for the Times West Virginian Newspaper

Good Morning Farmington!
I wanted to start my column off with a bit of nostalgia this week. I was looking through some photo albums over the weekend that my late grandfather, Harry “Huck” Jones had put together before he passed away (hard to believe it’ll be 12 years in a few days) and one photo always sticks out because it’s so neat to look at but also because we have no idea who the man in the photo is. I’m including it in my column this week and if anyone can put a name to this face, please let me know as we’re trying to keep it all documented on these precious keepsakes. The picture is of the Flood of 1948 and shows the center of town where Mill and Main Streets intersect. In the background you can see the old liquor store, Gango’s store, and how high the Mighty Buff crept into town. If anyone has any info about this picture, or any stores about the flood, I’d love to hear them!

Contact Info for Farmington News
I also wanted to mention that I found old newspaper clippings (he saved a lot of things!) from the Farmington News section of years past and how neat it was to read about people’s vacations, baby showers, weddings, and other local news from citizens. I’d really appreciate it if anyone has things going on to please let me know! You can contact me by mail at PO Box 513 Farmington WV 26571, phone 304-825-6690, or email auburn

Only Two FHI Breakfasts to Go!
What a nice time we had at the FHI breakfast this past Sunday! I think those who attended would agree that it was nice to see lots of friends and neighbors out despite the weather being a bit gloomy. Nothing cures those end of winter blues like a hot breakfast and some laughs! A reminder for those who would like to come down to the community building for some home cooking, there are only two more breakfasts scheduled for the month, on Sunday the 22nd and 29th from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. For a donation of $8 per adult and $3 per child 10 and under you get scrambled eggs, sausage patties, home fries, biscuits, sausage gravy, mixed fruit, coffee, juice, and water. You are welcome to eat in or grab a carry out meal. Proceeds benefit the Homecoming at Farmington which will be held on Saturday August 15th this year.

Congratulations!
Congrats to the Lady Husky Basketball Team! We’re really proud of all of you girls and happy your dream of a State Championship came true!

Happy Sweet Sixteen!
Lots of warm Birthday wishes go out to Taylor Lively who will be having her Sweet 16th Birthday on Sunday March 22nd!

Davisson Brothers Fans
I just wanted to mention, to those who are fans of a local group who “made good” and those who may want to check them out, the Davisson Brother’s Band’s record is now out in stores. It features new music as well as some ol’ favorites. It really is worth a listen! Please support this truly talented group by picking up their CD!

FHI Meeting Info
The next monthly meeting for Farmington Homecoming Inc. (FHI) will be Monday, March 30th at 7 pm in the Mayor’s Office. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Homecoming this year will be a one day event scheduled for Saturday August 15th, 2009.
