Farmington News for the week of April 27th, 2009
Good Morning Farmington!
Warm weather is finally here! I’m so happy that we’re finally heading into warm weather and out of cold season (but into allergy season for some of us!) and the yucky germs. A reminder to everyone out there, it’s not too early to get a sunburn. If anyone saw me walking around town this week, you’d have noticed my arms got a nice pink glow about them over the weekend. Sunscreen is a must because you never know when you could be getting burnt and not realize it! Kyan and I had been enjoying a play date with some of our friends at MOMS Club on Friday and while I had slathered the little man, Mommy forgot to put some on herself early enough! I was happy that it was nice enough for a good opening weekend at the Shinnston Drive-In. If anyone wants to see two movies for less that the cost of a ticket at any theatre in the area, see what’s playing on the weekend!

Memories of No. 9 Opening This Weekend
I just wanted to remind everyone that the play “Stories from the Farmington Mine Disaster” will be opening this week with the first performances on May 1st and 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and on the 3rd at 2 p.m. in Room 314 of Wallman Hall. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $4 for students with ID. You can call the Box Office at (304)367-4240 for more information. Performances will continue on the 7th-9th as well. A big thank you to FSU’s Undergraduate Research Program who funded  the project, as well as students Celi Oliveto, Samantha Hoffman, and Jason Young who conducted the interviews, and Dr. Francine Kirk, Director of the play, and Photographer Bob Campione whose photos help to tell the story that touched almost every person in our town and community. I encourage everyone to try to make it to one of the performances as it promises to be an evening to remember.

Car Wash to benefit 8th Grade Class Graduation at FMS
The 8th Grade class at Fairview Middle School will be having a Car Wash and Bake Sale on Saturday May 2nd to raise money for their Graduation. Anyone interested can pull their vehicles into the First Exchange Bank and get it scrubbed down and pick up a sweet treat while you’re at it! They will be doing the Car Wash by donations so dig into those pockets and help these students out!

I.O.O.F. Paving Progress
I have some updates on the paving project for our I.O.O.F. Odd Fellows Cemetery. The project was put out to bid in February and was awarded to Cooper Asphalt, Inc. in mid March who, weather permitting, will be starting the paving process for the road leading up to the cemetery in the next few weeks. Funding has only been secured for a portion of the access road to the cemetery but the I.O.O.F. Eclectic Lodge No. 67 along with the Region VI Planning and Development Council will continue to seek grand funds to pave the entire road surrounding the cemetery, which will be done in phases until completed. With each phase, monies will be needed to meet the local match which is based on a percentage of the funds requested. An application to the George W. Bowers Family Charitable Trust for $10,000 will also be submitted and if approved would be used to purchase gravel for the remaining cemetery road not being paved. Donations are still needed and can be mailed to I.O.O.F. Eclectic Lodge No. 67, P.O. Box , Farmington, WV 26571 with “Cemetery road access fund“ written on the memo line. I hope that many of you will take interest in making a donation as several of our loved ones are buried in the Odd Fellow’s cemetery, including several of the men from the No. 9 Mine Disaster, our veterans, friends and neighbors.

Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday to Suzi (Daft) Bolyard who will celebrate her birthday on April 26TH!

A reminder that we are still $340 short of our goal which must be met in order for them to be hung. Anyone interested in renting the town sign, whose proceeds go towards the balance of the flags, should contact Town Hall to reserve it at (304)825-6442. The prep work for this event started back in January and it’s good to know that we’re doing something right!

Farmington News for the Week of April 13th 2009

Good Morning Farmington!

I was enjoying the column that Oce Smith had in the Sunday paper this week. Such nice observations of this end of the county. One thing really bugged me though when he was listing what isn’t in our downtown and that was the fact that he said that Toothman’s Hardware is gone. I know the preface to the column said that because Mr. Smith is recovering from illness it was a previously written article, but has Bob ever shut down the Hardware store for a long period of time? I can’t even recall it being shut down that long when the tractor trailer too the curve too short and hit the side of the building back in the 1990’s! I’m sure several people in the area who read the column were just as confused as I was.

Welcome Flags Have Arrived, Help Still Needed!
The Welcome to Farmington Flags have arrived! A big thank you to everyone who has rented the town sign for their messages and helped us get closer and closer towards purchasing these flags. We are, however, still $340 short on the purchase and although the flags are here, the Mayor will not permitt them to be put up until that goal is met! Please help us reach it by contacting Town Hall at 825-6442 to rent the sign, which displays your personal messages, local businesses, organization news and fundraisers, etc. to the traffic flowing through town on Rt. 218 and passing on Rt. 250. We again thank everyone who has rented the sign in the past and those who continue to do so!

Congratulation!
Best wishes to our newest Newlyweds, Mr and Mrs. Josh and Tasha (Daft) Carpenter! The two will be united in marriage this Saturday. Good Luck!

Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day which takes place on April 22nd (next Wednesday). Please take time to do a little something extra in your daily routine to be a little friendlier to the enviroment. Go for a walk instead of driving and along the way pick up some trash that might have fallen beside the road. Enjoy our beautiful park and playground. Let the windows open up and enjoy some of that fresh Spring air. Take interest in a local club or organization that helps our community. It doesn’t take much to get a little greener!

Farmington Senior Center Hot Dog Sale
Please mark your calendars for a hot dog sale which will be going on Wednesday, April 15th from noon-3 p.m. hosted by the Farmington Senior Citizens. The sale will be held at the Senior Center located on Mill Street. Please pop in and grab a nice lunch!

FHI Meeting
The next Monthly meeting of the Farmington Homecoming Inc. (FHI) will be Monday, April 27th at 7 pm in the Mayor’s Office. All are encouraged to attend! Homecoming will be held Saturday August 15th this year!

Happy Birthday!
Birthday wishes go out to Mary Fisher of Northview who will be turning 93 years young on April 18th!

Summer MCPARC Program to be Held
The MCPARC Summer Playground Program will be held again this year at our playground located at the Ray Kelly Athletic Field (Farmington Ballfield and Community Building). The program will run from June 15th thru July 24th from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Lunch and a variety of activities and play will be provided for those attending. Children ages 5-12 are welcome to attend! We had a lot of success with our 1st program held last year and we hope to see some familiar as well as new faces this year! Also a reminder that anyone in the community under the age of 18 can come down on days the program is held and enjoy a free lunch! All you have to do is let the supervisor know before 9:30 a.m. on the days you are going to eat so that there is enough for everyone!

Deepest Sympathies
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family of another Farmington Farmer Alumnus, Charles "Ralph" Martin Sr. Ralph was a member of the Farmington High School Fighting Farmers' 1951 undefeated football team. The family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts, please take the time to bless your children and grandchildren.

Oce Smith: Just Observin' Column for April 12th, 2009
I don't know how many of you read the column by Oce Smith on Easter Sunday but it had some information about our area and the communities within. Oce is recovering from an illness at the moment and this column was prefaced by a note stating that it was a previously written column.

A think that struck my attention in his "observin'" of Farmington is that the information wasn't all that accurate. So I wanted to publish this excerpt from the article which is just the part that covers Farmington:

Finally, we drove over through Idamay to Farmington, where, certainly no disrespect intended, there was virtually no downtown Farmington remaining - except for the large Manchin Clinic, which hovers over its domain like a giant cloud draping itself down over a huge field of corn.
Although the old-time Farmington Farmers are still unalterably angry about losing their high school, the young set seem to accept it with more grace and less care than in some other corners of the County of the Swamp Fox, in that it is just a short sprint up the road to their present unit.
However, the commercial life of the town is another story.
The Manchin Furniture Store and Papa Joe's Grocery Store burned down, as did their carpet outlet over on the main highway. Ningy Parrish's Drug Store & Soda Fountain is gone. Edna Parrish's Resturant is gone. The Gango place is gone. The Toothman Hardware is now gone. We don't knwo about Sam Bennett's Pool Room.
The tremendous new bridge which the state erected across the creek was certainly a plus in regard to the traffic flow, and across the creek and across Route 250 the Hutsons have built a beautiful new funeral parlor, if innately a funeral parlor can be beautiful.
Although it is outside the realm of Downtown Farmington, there is some commercial activity up along Route 250 to the north of the town.

I just wanted to clear up the fact that Toothman Hardware is very much open and doing well. I'm certain several gentlemen in the area would be wondering what in the world they were doing buying bird seed, household this and that, or just a friendly talk or piece of advice from Bob if, according to Mr. Smith, he were closed down. I think just about the only time he was shut down was when the tractor trailor hit the side of the building in the 1990's if only for a day or two.

I also wanted to say that we may not have a Drug Store & Soda Fountain, but you can still get your prescriptions filled at the Drug Store located inside the Manchin Clinic, you can also recieve a nice cut and color at the three beauty parlors we have in town, either Lisa K's ProStyling and Cuts, Curry's Cut and Curl or Tranquil Waters. We also have a functioning Senior Citizens Center, a Martial Arts Studio, Private Investigative Service, a local Bee Keeper for all our honey needs, as well as all the businesses within and just outside of city limits on Rt. 250. We may not be booming, but we still have local people who help out our community, and I'd rather take my business to Tom Sherry than a Grease Monkey any day, and I know if I need help with my organization or a fundraiser, there are several people who are ready to give whatever they can to help out.

But that's just me, "observin'."

I do recall a few times when we were little where we had to put snow pants beneath our Easter dresses, however! Let’s hope this year isn’t one of those times!

Farmington News for the week of March 30th

Farmington News Week of March 30th

Good Morning Farmington!
I noticed that the rain we had this week has sure brought out the daffodil’s (and I even spotted a dreaded dandelion yesterday in a crack in the sidewalk! Yikes!) everywhere from flowerbeds to spots along side the road. I’m not sure how everyone else’s gardening is coming along but it seems like one thing we sure have popping up around town just happens to be a lot of real estate signs! If anyone’s in the neighborhood for a nice neighborhood they just need to shop around town! I also wanted to pass along that another “spring favorite” is popping up in patches from what I hear (and smell!).
